nice! which album(s) did you check out? Started with the Essential Eels to see what they're about. I want to listen to Electro-Shock Blues next - any suggestions on what I should check out after that?

i think electro shock blues and blinking lights are the best albums. they're also the most depressing, though, and can get pretty rough. ESB is like a spiral into horrific depression for almost the entire record, and then the last song is so unbelievably redemptive. those 2 albums are solid straight through; most of the others have great songs but are kind of uneven.

Electro-Shock Blues was written after the death of E's sister and mother and is pretty harrowing, but also full of moments of unexpected grace. I think it's his finest album. From there, I'd second Blinking Lights as a must-hear, but I'd also suggest the follow-up to ESB, Daisies of the Galaxy, which is a warmer, more hopeful record.
From there, the records are less consistently mind-blowing, but still worth hearing. Beautiful Freak sounds the most dated, but it has a handful of lovely songs- "Spunky" and "Beautiful Freak" come to mind immediately. Generally speaking, even a lesser eels album is better than much of what's out there.

Also, I'd have to mention Adam Duritz. Some brilliant lyrics.
Also Guy Garvey.

Absolutely. Brian Fallon enjoyed it enough to build an entire chorus around one of Duritz's lines. But that could also be because Fallon is a douche.

I was never a huge CC fan til I got the Across a Wire live record. That's the greatest thing and made me regret not seeing them back then

Definitely. Duritz is a brilliant lyricist and storyteller, even if he is a little weird.
Sorry for the mini hijack, peeps. Another of my favourite lyricists is David Byrne. "I'm just an animal, looking for a home; share the same space for a minute or two."

Has Ike Reilly been mentioned? Seems like someone whose lyrics would appeal to quite a few folks around here.

I like Father John Misty, Nick Cave, Tom Waits and Warren Zevon for their lyrical stylings and I have a thing for whoever does the lyric writing in Alkaline Trio, The Low Anthem and Arctic Monkeys too.
