My name in the liner notes? Yup, they got my money.
I do have one concern: I don't really know what my address will be in whenever the EP is released (as late as December 2014?). Is there some way to change an address after a pledge is made? I put in my work address, but our office is expanding and may move in June. And my apartment lease is up in June, too, so that's no dice.

Bit of an annoying way of doing it for those who don't do vinyl... I believe there is a minimum pledge (less than $15) you can make just to get a digital copy of the EP.

A bit nervous about the shows not being announced, hoping it doesn't clash with Murder By Death in Colorado. But pledged record and show ticket.

Is that a new THS instrumental in the background of that video? Sounds like em.

I don't know how I feel about this guys. I wish we knew what "portion" of the pledge goes to the K+L Guardian Foundation... either way, I'm in for a minimum pledge, but this feels sorta bizarre to me.

I am all for paying to receive special releases, presales, and content from the group. That is what a fan club is, maybe even some meet and greets as well like Alkaline Trio's Blood Pact years ago. But putting a price tag on US membership kind of seems to miss the point of what the whole thing started as. Also, putting a price tag on everything from jogging, giving hometown tours, and sharing some beer with strangers is kind of a tough pill to swallow. If this is "the new business of making music" something is bound to get lost in the shuffle and I don't know how comfortable I am with that. That said, the ep and content seem worth $15 for major fans and there's no stopping the band from using the Unified Scene moniker. Plus, a portion of it being donated to the K+L Guardian Foundation is icing on the cake. I will say though that my US shirt means a lot more to me than "I like the band and I have $30 I can depart with".

It just doesn't sit right and feels like a money-grab from the band. Especially since we don't know what portion of the pledge goes to Jersey Mike's kids.

I think it's cool. It's not like they're charging to be part of the unified scene, they're charging for some cool stuff that just happens to also be called the unified scene. Not a big issue for me. Regardless of how much money goes to the K+L Guardian Foundation, it's a nice gesture, and one they didn't have to make. Most of the expensive rewards are pretty funny, and I doubt that anyone's actually going to pay for a haircut from Tad.
That being said, I would KILL for a spare £250 to jam with the band at soundcheck.

I can see both sides of this. On one hand, it's a kinda of cool idea and it's nice that they're doing this for a good cause (though, as others have pointed out, we don't know how much is going to the foundation). And I say if people are willing to pay these prices for that sort of experience, power to them. It's their money.
On the other hand, I think the way the pledges are set up really sort of cuts out a core part of their audience: college kids and twenty-somethings. A lot of the "perks" offered are either expensive, geared toward people who know where they'll be living a year from now, or both. I appreciate that THS has always been about community and such but the whole "We are all The Hold Steady" schtick is starting to wear a bit thin.
That being said, I don't really think it's a money grab. I think the guys are sincere about this and just wanted to go about it in a more fun/creative way. This could work really well if THS fulfills everything they promised and people don't feel ripped off. I know Stevie Van Zandt did a similar pledge drive to put on the Rascals shows and some people who pledged a lot of money were complaining because it took him a really long time to deliver the stuff he promised.

I have a few questions:
We're grandfathered in to the Unified Scene because we joined back when it was free, right?
If I show my receipt for the run of shirts I bought way back when, do I get to jog with Craig?
Does anyone know how to donate money to the K&L Foundation in a more direct fashion?

I only just saw the announcement on Facebook. First real big Hold Steady news in a long time, I'm really excited, and I think it's awesome that they're releasing something 'only available for unified scene members'. I would really love more than anything, to go to the 10-year show. More than anything. But New York is a hell of a long way. Just managed to grab the very last 'name in notes' bundle. Phew.

rawkguitars can hit you up with the address to mail checks for the K&L Foundation.
i could wish folks didn't dwell on negativity. it is long, long past time when the band should have set up a proper fan club, with an effective means to communicate with/provide rewards to/love/market to the fans. i took the K&L foundation as at fundamentally decent thing - a way to provide a real benefit to K & L and at the same time, honor the Unified Scene that was by giving honor to Jerseymike. They're earnest and kind and looking to connect with the fans outside of a show (for the first time in a long time). some of the wording may have been a little awkward, and i hope they let us know how much the final gift to the K&L foundation is . . . but i don't for a second doubt that they're doing the right thing in pretty much the right way.
and i'm SO STOKED that putting some energy into new album, new fan club, new EP. eep. it's gonna rage.
some of the old timers can mourn the sweaty stage invasions, making craig forget the lyrics to killer parties by sloshing beer in his face, and drinking with tad after the show. but even though tad's sober and i'm old and they play like professionals, i went to that ottobar show with jerseymike last year and it was, in some ways, even better than that first night.
so, mebbe that's just me. but i just can't be cynical about the band (finally) making an effort to engage, put out some new material, and knock this one outta the park.

hoodrat, I totally agree with everything you said. It's great that the band is modernizing, reaching out to the fanbase, etc. And I'm as stoked as everyone else that we're coming up on a big year for the band where we'll all get to experience the covers EP, announcement of a new record, promo push, and tons of shows. I'm also not opposed to THS getting a cut of our pledges, since they are providing a commodity (whether it be a new EP, or a private performance) and it has become increasingly difficult for bands to make money off of record sales. And most importantly I am all for the progression of the band into a new age and not being nostalgic about the past (e.g. Franz's departure, or Tad's drunken antics on stage).
Having said this, I think full disclosure is important. If this truly is all in the name of reaching out to the fans and remembering jerseymike (as Craig and Tad seem to indicate in their Pledge video), shouldn't 100% of the proceeds go to K + L? If not, that's fine, but then I would think it's a weak on their part to center the advertising for the Pledge around Mike's death, especially given the fact that they're asking for $150 for Tad to cut someone's hair.

All serious talking points aside, if the band found a way to repress AKM and SS on vinyl for a reasonable price, that bar would reach 100% by tomorrow night. The band has a strong start for 2014, the foundation gets money, ebay and discog flippers bite the dust, and every THS fan not able to drop $300 on a record get the best xmas gift they could imagine.

If PledgeMusic is like any other halfway respectable crowdfunding site there will be an option on the site to change the shipping address all your active campaigns have on file prior to their rewards' ship dates.
Also, remember kids, "every show can't be a benefit." I have faith in our boys that the goal reflects a number that allows the band to break even and give some cash to the family of a dear friend of theirs.
And I personally love it when the rewards get more ridiculous and arguably dumber as the price increases. It makes me feel like the producer values the fans who just want to support a good cause and get a $15 vinyl record out of it. No self respecting Scenester has $15,000 to their name and the Hold Steady knows it. We're hoodrats.
That said, I have a little extra money right now and some frequent flier miles so I reserved myself a spot at the NYC anniversary show.

To me The Unified Scene has always been a community, maybe for most a virtual one, but a community nonetheless. The most positive thing any community can do is respectfully unite (or in this case, be unified?) with its shared interests, resources, and enthusiasm when called upon to help others in a time of need. JerseyMike helped build this community as much or more than anyone and this is an amazing opportunity to honor his memory and thank him for all the shared friendships and good times that were occasioned by the existence of these boards and in turn, the community it grew to be. The band has been generous enough to offer their time, talents and notoriety towards a cause, that I can personally absolutely vouch for, is very close to their heart. Keep in mind, they absolutely did not have to do this, and I am pretty sure no one really would have noticed if they hadn't. For those who apparently are not entirely on-board with the way the band or its team chose to handle this charitable effort, feel free to contact me directly and I can help you make direct donations to the foundation for JerseyMike's two children. I can assist you if your donation needs to be made electronically but the easiest method is to mail in whatever you feel to: K&L Guardian Foundation c/o Jayson Bowser 1518 Green Street Harrisburg, PA 17102 If you are not aware, last year I played ringleader and helped gather $2,400 from the fine folks on this board (which did not include those who sent it their donations directly to the foundation). This is still very much an option for anyone here who may disparage the "crowd sourcing" but actually truly does still care about Mike's children and their future. If you want to know what it meant to the family, you can read through the posts on this page of the applicable thread: www.theholdsteady.proboards.com/thread/4201/rest-peace-jersey-mike?page=5Also, if anyone feels money is an issue, I am sure that Kaiya and Lennon would be more than happy to receive a letter of remembrance about their father, a simple holiday card, or the gift of self-made artwork. This does not have to be about the donation and the "rewards" received. Personally the email I got and shared in the thread above was the best gift I got last holiday season. That was a true reward. In summary, I hope everyone in this community can stay positive and rally around a good cause while knowing there are some massive things in the pipeline for 2014. - Rich
