How much crack does one need to smoke to rank the arctic monkeys debut 10 spaces above Marquee Moon? Probably the most important post-english blues boom guitar record ever, trumped by a very strong debut of Libertines inspired indie rock. If there is justification there, I fail to see it.

Probably about as much as it takes to rank an arcade fire record over almost everything else

Probably about as much as it takes to rank an arcade fire record over almost everything else well said. these RS lists are rarely consistent or sensible, even where it's not a matter of personal opinion. i'm not a huge boston fan, but their debut LP is somewhere in the 40s on this list, which is beyond bogus. everyone owned it when it came out. it's the 2nd highest selling debut of all time (behind GNR), and almost every song on it was a chart-topping hit.

i don't really have an opinion on boston. i severely dislike arcade fire and can't imagine ranking their debut over something like unknown pleasures

It's weird that they tend to rank historical relevance so inconsistently.
So like Elvis isn't necessarily as massive a deal historically in rock as he's often made out to be, but he had a fairly large hand in popularizing something resembling rock music. And that's historically relevant. And he's somewhere in the 80s or whatever. And then they place things with similar (and sometimes less) historical impact (and longevity) in the top 10 (License to Ill, The Strokes, NWA).
And Drake is on there.
And there's a serious underrepresentation of independent hip-hop (something with both historical and artistic importance), instead glorifying entirely mainstream hip-hop sensibilities.
I don't know, man. I feel like every music publication has some sort of pseudo-political music agenda to push and that all of their lists end up just some perverted amalgam of somewhat notable and completely off the wall things rather than a thoughtful and carefully plotted depiction of fan opinion / reality.

well, to be fair, Elvis wasn't much of an "album" artist. him being ranked low didn't bother me because he was all about singles.

But it makes sense for him to be higher up in the context of lifetime achievement.
And there are other rankings certainly focused on lifetime achievement (Hendrix, for instance).

There is a comment below that says apparently any artist whose greatest triumph was their debut was higher up the list, and any whose greatest triumph was subsequent to the debut was 'deliberately' pushed down the list.
