I am giving this a post-Thanksgiving weekend bump. I am received many very generous donations with some checks still in the mail. You kids rawk and we will, as a community, be making a very significant statement with this donation. One thing I should point out, no donation amount is too small. I know a lot of us live on very tight budgets these days, hell, I am one of them. But a bunch of $5 donations goes a long way too. So, maybe pass on that last nightcap at the tavern or that dessert at the restaurant and throw a Lincoln into the collection pot. Thank you all ... I remain so impressed by this community that JerseyMike worked so hard to help build. Black Friday. Done. Cyber Monday. Done. Today is Giving Tuesday. Do it. I'll send you some cash via Paypal tonight, just to be sure you get it in time, rather than rely on the USPS to deliver a check. Nothing huge as I am a bit strapped right this minute. I'll be giving again at the Abbey Bar event, whenever that takes place.

Instead of paying for my workplace Christmas party, we sent money for this. I told my coworker that's why we weren't going - because he kept bugging me to go. He bought our tickets to the party. Hope springs eternal. XO WD

I am giving this a thread a "last call" to be a part of the Unified Scene collective donation. We have a pretty significant amount raised so far but I am greedy and there is a nice, fat round number I have set as a new goal. This does not mean you can not donate weeks or months from now or annually for that matter. It is only "last call" on the community donation aspect and I want to get it to the family.
If you have not donated, forgot, or never knew about this cause, please let me know if you would like to participate. Also, not amount is too small.
Again, as a community, be making a very significant statement with this donation.
I said it before and will say it again, thank you all ... I remain so impressed by this community that JerseyMike worked so hard to help build.

Okay kids, you officially rose up and kicked collective ass for the memory of JerseyMike.
As a community we will be making a $2400.00 donation to the K&L Foundation.
Now the hard part which is writing the letters to the kids and telling them what their father meant to us. If anyone wants to offer a few thoughts, quotes or content I would appreciate it. Otherwise, Polly and I will compose the notes and pilfer a few anecdotes from the many posts in this thread.
Again, thank you all who donated (you know who you are, I am not going to go all Romper Room and read off everybody's name and I don't think you are expecting that).
You all rawk.
- Rich

That is awesome ! I'm proud to be a part of our little corner of the world here. I can't imagine how hard it would be to write those letters. Mike's positivity was infectious. I'm just now thinking of running into him at a big concert here in Hershey a few months ago. Bob Dylan and Bob Weir. I hadn't expected to see him there. Our "conversation" as we walked past each other between sets went like this:
Mike (big eyed and sweaty): yyyeeeeeaaaaaaahhhhhhh !!!!!! (it was actually longer than that)
Me (post toastie): fuck yeeeaaah !

I want to share some of the heartfelt thank you notes I received from Mike's brother, Billy Van Jura, and the steward of the foundation for the kids and close friend of Mike's from Harrisburg, Jason Bowser, who said ::
"Where do I begin man? I guess a hearty and sincere thank you is certainly in order, but I don't think that expresses how grateful we are for your thoughtfulness and donations. What you've done for me (and Billy I'm sure -- Mike's brother who is copied), is validate everything my friend Mike has done."
"One thing he did all on his own though was support and promote bands. His favorite was The Hold Steady, as you (and everyone on the planet) may know. Knowing Mikey like I did, it was uncanny how The Hold Steady was like the soundtrack of his life. I think he knew that, which is why he identified with them so strongly. The music didn't define him, it was more symbiotic — like the music was written for him."
"The Foundation is growing steadily and, thanks to support like yours Rich, I am confident Mike's kids are going to get by as well as they can without their dad. I don't know how close you became with Mike, but the other side of him was a father that basically lived for his kids. They have a huge support net, thanks to Mikey's connections like the local and Unified Scene and for that I'm also grateful. He wanted them to live and experience life. He started taking Kaiya on big multi-state music road trips just last year and vowed to make it an annual thing. This is something we're going to try to carry on."
To those of you who donated, I am sure you realize when he is thanking me/Rich, he is thanking all of you. I was just the conduit from here, this impressive little community, to the foundation. Again, thank you all for rising up and honoring JerseyMike with not only your donations, but your words and positive thoughts as well. You all rawk.

Here's a picture of Mike's parents and me- his mom came over and talked to me when she saw my Unified Scene shirt. I even got to meet baby Lennon, but he wouldn't give me a high five. I'm not sure if I was the first Unified Scene member to finish, but I did get a medal for being 3rd in my age group (presumably because "old" was underrepresented at the race). This was a lot of fun and I hope to see more of us there next year.

I just saw this about the jersey mike memorial run. There is also a video about the run behind the link deadgoon posted. I am pretty impressed. This pragmatic attitude that led to actions like the memorial run, rawkguitar's call for unified support, and probably some more concerted actions in support of jersey mike's family - this kind of pragmatism always has been one my favorite things about America. Alle Achtung!

FaceBook reminded me today. I don't want to remind NCD, but I probably will sooner rather than later. In reading the old replies, two of the old scene members who commented are also no longer with us. I cherish each and every one of the friends I made here through the years. And we all know who did the most to bring us all together. XO WD
