Newbie here. Had to search for a THS forum after seeing last night's show at the Corner Hotel. I'm an ex-pat who moved to Australia from New York City in 2006 and have never seen the boys live. Needless to say last night's show didn't disappoint.
Didn't keep a set list and didn't have my camera but here's a few odds and ends: -- Melbourne had 3 days of temps over 43 C (109 F) last week but last night was actually kind of cool. Still, the place was hot and muggy. I walked out at the show's conclusion just after midnight soaked with sweat. -- Stuck Between Stations into Sequestered in Memphis to start in front of sold-out house. The Corner Hotel is a traditional, low-ceilinged venue with a pair of bars in the rear. First thing out of Craig's mouth: "It's good to be back in a ROCK CLUB." -- Front of stage had the most action. I got there late so stood near the back. Middle was full of old guys with arms crossed and blank expressions. What's up with that? -- Crowd reacted strongest to songs from Stay Positive. THS gets no airplay in Australia, where having the right rock 'look' is a much more valued attribute than musical talent and/or passion. -- Sitting in one of Melbourne's amazing cafes on the morning after I've jotted down 19 songs. Closed first set with amazing Discouraged into Slapped Actress. Only one song in the encore: A beautifully drawn out Resurrection highlighted by Craig's manic declaration of joy. -- Don't know it it's typical but Craig seemed genuinely surprised and pleased with crowd reactions to songs like Hoodrat, Stay Positive, Chips Ahoy and South Town Girls. -- Highlights for me: Constructive Summer (my favorite song from 2008), Joke About Jamaica, Massive Nights, Stevie Nix, Cutters, Navy Sheets, Hot Soft Light and Charlemagne. -- Craig twice thanked crowd for coming out to see them.

or having musical talent or passion is 'daggy' and 'old fashioned' 'cause guys like The Angels were people's parents bands tho Living End and You Am I do ok
my personal theory is that all the good youth oriented radio in Aus - mostly TripleJ and RAGE (on TV) meant that music fans didn't have to turn to classic rock and so they get a bit hostile to it

I ended up in the band room afterwards talking with those guys and it didn't surprise me that they were humble and extremely hospitable, particularly with their rider. No one else was there so I did feel a little sycophantic but what the hell, they were great and it was one of the best gigs I've seen in years. Must admit though, I didn't see many old guys with their arms crossed or the right look. I think I was more interested in the band. Anyhow, enough of that. There was a notable absence of women though which I found strange!

I loved the roar from the crowd and Craig's somewhat manic grin for 'doublewhiskycokenoice'....that was a moment right there.
edit: grandpaboysfriend, how the hell did you end up in the band room afterwards?

its easy if you either know members of the band or have hung around a venue long enough that everybody knows you and assume you work there the latter only works for me in the Annandale now watch me fail to get in the band room tomorrow after that post....
unenthuastic crowds are a big Sydney problem... a review of the last THS show mentioned them, as did a very recent No Age/Jay Reatard show. and my own experiances at Winnebago Deal last week

For whatever it's worth, I didn't mean to imply the Melbourne crowd was less than welcoming to THS. The front of the room was hanging on every note -- Craig's interaction with them was non-stop and on songs like South Town Girls and Slapped Actress he seemed genuinely pumped by the crowd's response.
It's just that from my spot in the back it looked and felt like half-price parma night at the Richwood RSL.

man Sydney crowds are the worst... Winnebago Deal last saturday played to a half full sleepy crowd at the Annandale i mean they're not THS but they were a pretty decent rock band, ya know?

Great show.
"THS gets no airplay in Australia"
THS get a fair run on 3RRR in Melbourne, thats where I first heard "Stevie Nix" & every record since has got pretty good airplay

there are a few DJs on 2ser in Sydney who have been flogging it and FBi 94.5 has a few fans... i remember when Seperation Sunday came out one of the DJs wrote an acrostic poem about them in the street press... not sure if i still have it. they would have played the new single any Triple J airplay? you'd figure the Living End connection would help

edit: grandpaboysfriend, how the hell did you end up in the band room afterwards? Pretty much how Tion said. I just walked straight in after the gig. Surprisingly, I was the only one in there and they were really welcoming and happy to talk. When I said I'd better get going they insisted I stay and offered me more beers. It was really cool actually. I wish I could remember the details of what we were talking about but I remember some of the topics being Minneapolis and how Craig is a fan of Paul Westerberg, what it was like touring with the Drive By Truckers etc. Also, RRR plays the Hold Steady heaps and that's how I got on to them a few years back. I wish I could see them again because I doubt they'll play a venue the size of the Corner again when they come back here.

i'm still kicking myselves because i was broke the first time they came out here... didn't see their Gaelic or boat cruise show i've only been in the Metro bandroom once, so i doubt i can sneak in. they usually have a security guard stationed outside. only way i got in last time was 'cause i was real life/internet friends w/ the band

I signed up to say this. Insane. Pretty much the greatest show I've ever been to in my short, short life. I sat through No Through Road and Vasco glued to the front of the main stage anxiously waiting and ended up crushed, almost pushed on stage when THS started, front row. Was just to the right of Craig and almost headbutted his guitar, haha. Got one of the roadies to grab me a setlist too which was great: Not entirely in order... Plus the encore had Killer Parties to finish the night off. And my camera phone gave me some decent shots: Got more photos and will chuck them up on Flickr soon if anyone's interested.

Hey Guys - I just posted a review of the Corner show on my site - just an awesome show - its taken me a week to recover enough to write the review. Check it out if you wanna... www.heyheymymy.com.au/2009/02/07/concert-review-the-hold-steady/I'm an old bloke from the 80's and 90's who thinks THS are the best new band I've heard in about 15 years.

hey dudes, i'm a newbie doing this forum thing to kill time at work. i got a bit re-excited reading this thread and had to reply! my boyfriend & i are from perth & flew over to melbourne for ths at laneway and the show at the corner. HOLY COW. i have never seen a more amazing show ever. i expected them to be freaking great, but i think i was still shocked at tightness of the band, the great set, the joy, everything! also, what an amazing crowd! we were right down the front, and the energy was so positive (although i could only spy one other lady in the crowd from where i was?). my boyfriend was being elbowed in the back during the whole show just because of the crowd crush, and afterwards the dude who was standing behind him came up and apologized. DUDE! who does that, ever? so freaking good.
