because the rest of the guys were punching the clock. I gotta disagree with this statement. Craig looked like he was having the most fun I've seen him have in a while, and Tad seemed really into the "guess the next tune" format And as far as what the "private college kids" were doing, who gives a rat's ass?- coming from the 40 year old white guy dancing his head off in the front row. the kids set the tone. if the kids aren't into it all the enthusiasm from older guys like us isn't going to make up for it.
Craig didn't break out the "So Much Joy" speech on this night. i think that kinda says it all. that, and Franz's demeanor the whole night spoke volumes.

private college kids:loosen up.for every kid in that room who was into it there were 3 or 4 of you just standing there. life's too short to act like an uptight middle aged white guy 20 years early. They were probably Canadians.

Drtpants, you're being way to hard on it all. All over the board you're bashing not only on the show, but other THS fans; Some of whom worked to make that show a reality (including ltalexander who made an awesome poster for the show). Take your own advice, loosen up. You got to go to a THS show. So you didn't get to drink, so the sound wasn't great. So what? THS, and the unified scene are about more then that.

LOVE the poster. and as a former events staffer at my school i know how much work goes into making shows like this happen.i just think your fellow students could have been a bit more enthused.if THS doesn't do it for you,who will?
and the Unified Scene?there were maybe a dozen in attendance.

Anyone that loves THS and cones out to support them is part of the Unified Scene. It doesn't matter if you have a US shirt or post on the boards, how you feel about THS makes you a member of the Unified Scene.

I think it probably helps to understand a few things about our school. This show was on a Monday night later in the school year, which means that way too many kids are worried about their grades and such. Had this show been earlier in the year or on a Thursday or Friday, I think people would have been more into it.
That said, I had no idea the crowd wasn't into it until after the show. I had a blast up front, as were the people around me. However, I was almost directly in front of Franz, and he seemed a bit tired and unresponsive. I was trying to egg him on during a piano solo, and he just gave me a weird look.
Btw, everyone in the band signed my poster, and they all said they thought it was awesome, which was a dream come true.

Ital, you Rock and so does your poster. you were also very helpful earlier in this thread with info and such. last thing i want to do is offend you by bagging on the imperfections of the show.clearly you are a real deal USer.
not every veteran THS show goer is like me, but many of us who have been to a lot of their shows and have seen them at their absolute best can't help but nitpick when we see a show that is less than totally rippin'.
no offense intended to you or anyone else there who was bringin' it. stay positive.

yeah no sweat. I saw them at Lolla in '07, and that show was superior in almost every way, but not everyone gets to see them like that. This was the first Hold Steady show for my suitemates, and they loved every minute of it. I was just wanting to point out that even on an off night, THS can still be life-changing.
Also, just wanted to give you guys a report about my poster. I'm still incredibly stoked about the whole thing.
If any of you want a poster from the event, I don't think I can sell them or any future ones I might screen print, but send me an email at ltalexander@gmail.com (that's an L at the beginning, btw), and I'll send you a pdf to print.

i do think that there were a lot of people at the show just hanging back and watching and sort of in awe. this is only the second time that THS has played STL. i know a lot of times when i see a band the first time, i tend to watch them more than get into a show. granted that wasn't the way i was the first time i saw THS. hopefully, that doesn't keep the guys from coming back the next time they swing through. i'm still hoping for a close off date show when they swing by with DMB.
