I remember when they played Curves and Nerves at Festival Pier in Philadelphia and almost dying. I have a recording of a show where they played Curves & Nerves, I think it's a DC show... When they finished, Craig said "You just witnessed the first ever SUCCESSFUL live version of that song... We played in Philly the other night but it was a disaster." Did anything seem to go wrong when you saw them do it? For a while that was all I had of Curves & Nerves, so I listened to it a lot and have always wondered what could have happened. I'm guessing Craig just thought it was a poor performance.

No... it was freaking amazing.
The crowd was small, it was the middle of the day... but I do remember a bunch of us going HOLY FUCKING SHIT when that song started.
I was also a little tipsy by the time they played... but as I said, it was freaking amazing when they played that song... if it was a disaster according to Craig... I guess maybe he forgot a lyric or something... Nothing sticks out as OMG IT WAS HORRIBLE. To my recollection it was freaking awesome and a shock, and was probably a stand out of the set.
Oh and I have to say... they out played DEVO.. because on that night.. DEVO freaking sucked.... which was quite sad, because I really was hoping they were gonna rock it.

I think it ground to a halt at the end, if I remember correctly- Like they didn't remember how the song ended. It wasn't that big a deal- they got through it- but Craig did refer back to it in DC.

I have only seen them twice, and never a headline gig, so I was pretty stoked they played Don't Let Me Explode at Counting Crows. Only cause I tend to imagine that bands play their catchiest tunes when they're supporting as to grab new fans or whatever. Probably wrong though!

Ok cool... It was like 2 years ago so it was hard to remember what was wrong. I do know that if it was horrible I would have remembered.

I've seen them back-to-back nights in the same city on a few occasions, and the setlists have always been very different.

Sorry to bump this, but I was just wondering how rare Killer Parties and Stevie Nix are. Those are the two songs I'm really hoping to hear that don't seem to be too common like Stuck Between Stations, but for some reason I can't see them being rare either. I just don't want to get my hopes up if it is unlikely that I'll hear them.

I've always said to never get your hopes up for anything. You never know what the band will play on any given night.

Stevie Nix is pretty common, they've played it at about 6 of the ten shows I've been to.
Regarding moshing, it's the most positive moshing I've ever experienced. I was at the Music Hall of Williamsburg, Brooklyn show, and was amazed at the crowd energy right up front. I was next to the stage, dead center, good natured pushing and swaying and swapping sweat, but anytime someone started to fall, 5 people would hold them up. I'm too old for this (48) but I get a high from all the physical energy of a Hold Steady show!

There are always a few rough people, but there are always those who help me keep from getting crushed (thanks to all ya'll who help with that btw!)
