From Hoodrat, via Board II (Updated February 21, 2014)
I thought I would try stickying a few questions that we see a lot here. (I have not locked the thread in case people would like to comment, but it will become less useful if this becomes a long thread; so i suggest PM'ing me if you have suggestions.)
What is the Unified Scene? You folks, us folks, those guys, these girls, with a double order of love and respect. Message board members are prone to waxing poetic about its meaning on a regular basis. Check the wiki for a compilation of some of our musings - holdsteady.wikia.com/wiki/Unified_Scene
Can I join? No joining required. You're in, babe. High five.
What's with the uniform/nerd shirt/joiner look? It's really not a uniform. holdsteady.wikia.com/wiki/Unified_Scene We just like the hold steady, and each other, and you. And we like being able to recognize people we met on the messageboard. Not everybody on the board has one or wears one to shows.
Can I get a shirt? Yep, they're free, but you should wait until next time someone OFFERS to buy a round a shirts, then pick an available number and sign up before they cut off requests. Again, check the wiki. It is probably NOT a good idea to post and try to "claim" a number ahead of time; no one keeps track unless they are actually organizing. If you want to put together a round of shirts yourself, it is probably a good idea to PM whoever did the last round for the details. Recent organizers include HSR, joelle, Bowery, Whiskey Daisy, and quite a few others.
Name everything Craig Finn has ever done, including obscure bonus tracks. Sunny D has the list here: theholdsteady.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=steady&action=display&thread=30
Where can I find live recordings? There are quite a lot out there. Unlike studio recordings, they are cool to trade here. See sticky on "file-sharing". Check out for a comprehensive archive maintained by TheWho at holdsteady.blogspot.com. Some full shows are available for purchase from iTunes and other online music stores.
Where can I find [obscure b-side]? Quite a few are available as downloads on major download stores like iTunes and Amazon. Others are available as b-sides to Aussie versions of Almost Killed Me and Boys and Girls in America. Sunny D's list - theholdsteady.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=steady&action=display&thread=30 includes all except the recent tracks off Stay Positive, and indicates what release they were on. You cannot post here asking for an illegally obtained copy. Nor can you link to a copy here.
Where can I find some Lifter Puller albums?
Currently, the book Lifter Puller v the End of (with download card) is out of stock on the merchsite, but you may be able to find it at other music retailers. Almost everything is now available for download from itunes, amazon and/or emusic now. Try downloadpunk.com too. Other than that, try ebay and other used album sales. The Who's live recordings website (linked above) also has some lifter puller shows.
Where can I find lyrics?
The wiki has lyrics to pretty much everything: holdsteady.wikia.com/wiki/The_Hold_Steady#Discography
In addition to the usual barrage of lyrics websites, you can also find an archived version of the old website, like this one:
