On the studio end, I feel like things will be alright. Hell, I would probably buy an album that is just Craig talking for an hour.
But with Franz leaving we're losing a large component of the live experience that makes them so much more special to me (and I'm sure I'm not the only one). I'll still go to every show, and each and every one will be the best show I've ever been to, and they'll still be my favorite band of all time.
But I'm gonna miss that part of the show, and all the energy that Franz brought to the stage, even if I can see Franz on his own (hopefully) much more this way. And I can't wait for that.
The future of the band looks fine. I'm just really sad.

Dear Franz,
You always seemed like a person from another time and place. A time when people we better dressed, cooler and drank exotic foreign liquors in a highball glass.
To paraphrase THS you have a certain kind of chemistry that makes a cool 'stache that much cooler.
The epic piano flourishes will be missed as well as the stage presence and those strange muppet-like eyes.

If it helps anyone see the future of THS better, just remember that the AKM sessions only has Franz (if I'm not mistaken) on "Certain Songs,"Modesto Is Not That Sweet," and "You Gotta Dance (With Who You Came to the Dance With)" 3 fucking awesome songs.

Allthough not as awesome as a bunch of those he didn't play on. Not to underestimate Franz' impact on the band - it is clearly that his presence has pushed the THS sound in new directions - but it shows that the four of them is able to create magic even without him. The hardest rocking songs on AKM, featuring only gitar, bass, drums and vocals, are among my favourites in the catalog.

well, three of them and Judd Counsel.
So, in effect most of AKM only featured 3/5 of what we know as the classic line-up.

Frankly, I am not a fan of Franz's solo stuff so I don't know how he is gonna be. In regards to the river's post, Tad also writes a lot of the music, Franz only wrote his piano parts. I don't know who the replacement will be but maybe he can write a lot as well. Maybe Craig will be able to step up.

tonyrockyhorror, i was thinking of buying a ticket to that but I listened to his myspace and wasn't a fan. i recommend you do as well. i love Franz with THS but on his own, he's kind of sub-par i do love your recordings however and i've been listening to them for a while, great gaslight from october

Fuck it, I'm avoiding some work. Frankly, I am not a fan of Franz's solo stuff so I don't know how he is gonna be. Okay, probably. ]Franz only wrote his piano parts. False. Maybe Craig will be able to step up. No chance. i love Franz with THS but on his own, he's kind of sub-par How are you measuring that?

i love Franz with THS but on his own, he's kind of sub-par How are you measuring that? insecure loser + (desire to appear louche and uninterested on a fansite he's clearly not visiting by accident + burning need to feel superior to those around him)/capacity for intelligent thought = pointless diss post in an appreciation thread. or, to simplify, he's measuring it in genuine dumbassery.

Where in that equation do you fit "created an account seemingly just to complain about Franz and the band"?

You've often said you don't think the boards should be blind love, Mike. So it seems unfair to have a pop at someone for having an opinion that's different to most people's. That he doesn't like Franz's solo album doesn't make him an insecure loser, or a genuine dumbass. I really think you owe an apology.

yeah but not really though. he's not getting one.
you're right, i don't think there should be blind love. that'd be pretty boring. but there should be respect enough to at least qualify unprovoked negative comments about the work of a man who has personally posted in this thread with some kind of explanation. as it is, this kid doesn't like franz's solo stuff as much as the hold steady, which is fine. some people were pissed when franz joined ths cause they don't like them as much as world/inferno. that's fine too. it's all silly and pointless since the three are different enough to render comparison in any depth totally redundant, but since subjectivity, like human equality, is a fallacy which it serves us best to accept, it's fine. but it was a lazy, unqualified, patronising diss and i have few reservations about calling him out on it.
that i called him an insecure loser doesn't necessarily make him an insecure loser (cause that's subjective too, right?); that he engaged in genuine dumbassery doesn't necessarily make him a genuine dumbass.

*sigh* i am too old for fighting on the internets. honestly, last night i kind of assumed it was sacto having a go at being sociable again, or maybe just smj trying to make my head explode. through the light of sobriety, i suspect it is really as it appears - some kid not all that into franz who perhaps didn't realize that posting patronizing insults in the sweet, posi, personal "thank you franz" thread would not come off so well. or maybe he did and thought it would be funny.
holly, i'm guessing you feel kind of sat upon by now. you should realize, franz is a member here, and kindly stopped by to acknowledge everyone's thanks. so, yeah, people jumped on you. if you want to discuss franz's merits as a solo performer, let's argue about it thoughtfully in some other thread or, more appropriately now i guess, the music forum. i promise not to call you names. and don't worry, i have checked out his myspace. i've also got the demos, the album, some bootlegs, and the new EP, and i've been to about 7 of his solo shows. so, i feel pretty well prepared for an argument.

Someone above had posted that they would pay to listen to Craig Finn talk. I have heard stuff like that about Dylan and Springsteen. Thats a fine line to cross, when the music becomes idolatry. i'd pay to listen to henry rollins talk, but i don't idolise him. I do not think someone should be called a dumbass for expressing his opinion. even when that opinion is that a board regular who has a ticket to see franz should check out his myspace because they might not have realised they weren't going to see the hold steady? that's pretty dumb. dude's not even heard the record yet. sorry for derailing the thread a bit.

rollins wouldn't have made a name for himself with his spoken word if there weren't people out there who wanted to hear it, though. it's not like he's been doing both throughout his career, but people knew that he was clever and witty and talented and eloquent so he already had a foot in the door when he started. if craig finn (or bob dylan) did a spoken word tour, curiosity alone would be more than enough for me to buy tickets if i felt the price was reasonable. my point is that the same words in another thread would still have been stupid and patronising. "you! boy with the ticket! if you'd made the effort i have and half-arsedly checked out a couple of low-quality streams of his solo stuff on myspace you'd know better than to buy that." people with that attitude can fuck right off. besides, my abuse would have seemed much more lighthearted if i could have left it at that one post and didn't then have to justify it to all you bleeding hearts.
