Well, you may not be dead but the visitation schedule is going to be awkward. Who gets Christmas? Where will we spend the New Year? Can we even go to Ybor together?
Man, asking if there is any way THS could cover Casanova is going to be tres tres awkward now.
I hope you make baskets of money and scads of albums and anytime you pull up and honk the horn, I'll come running.

Franz will be certainly missed, but more than that i feel sorry for whoever replaces him. Those are some tough shoes to fill.

can i just say that i love all y'all for this thread being an outpouring of positivity about franz. i'm bummed too, and i'll miss that dude at THS shows, but i have a feeling we'll all be seeing plenty of him. right? right. MORE GUIGNOL SHOWS, please. or you know, whatever else you feel like getting up to. I've been waiting an awfully long time for a chance to say this, and now it can be told: The harpsichord was Tad's idea. Not dead, Franz laughed my arse off. not dead.

Tip for grieving THS / FN fans:
Put on Major General, go to"Note on a subway wall".
Listen to Franz sing -
"I'm so sad I'm so sorry I love you so much I could die from guilt I feel so bad"
works for me anyway!

I think in vaguely attributing it to him leaving The Hold Steady, you might have just ruined it for me.

Sad sad sad. Not exactly a surprise, since I had the vibe that FN was moving in direction of wanting to concentrate on his own stuff rather than fitting it in around THS. But he will be missed! His crazy gleeful grin at the keyboard was always a highlight for me at live shows.

Well, I never saw this coming. Franz, I will miss hearing you with THS. Your keyboards are a big part of the band’s sound for me, and (as the blondette put it) your “crazy gleeful grin at the keyboard was always a highlight” for me, too. But that’s the only place I will miss you, and I sure look forward to seeing and hearing you in other contexts and solo. BTW do you know where I should send my audition tape?

But, but, but...... Who will Galen have to play off of, or with up there? For the love of god think of the children Franz! Particularly that freakishly tall one with the bass.

Our first show was at the ABC Brewery a few years back. We were standing on the side of the stage and at the end of the show during "Killer Parties" I helped her climb up to join the band. She was one of the first up and of course was soon joined by about 100 of the band's closest friends. So she ran behind Franz and asked if he minded if she stayed there. He said not at all, and when she thanked him after the song he kissed her hand and said it was his pleasure. Oh well - they will always have 7 WTC: Wayne

Sad sad sad. Not exactly a surprise, since I had the vibe that FN was moving in direction of wanting to concentrate on his own stuff rather than fitting it in around THS. But he will be missed! His crazy gleeful grin at the keyboard was always a highlight for me at live shows. I echo the vibe thing. Heard this news second hand last night, took a moment to think about it first and the more I think about it the more it makes sense. I am not one for speculating usually but I would wager that promo for his own stuff has taken a total backseat with THS's "biggest" release and all the associated touring with being in the band in the first place. I sense a concerted effort from our Major General and not too much blind panic going on at THS HQ. It's just interesting on so many levels, and whilst it'll be different seeing THS without him, it'll certainly happen so I'm looking forward to whoever comes into the fold too. So: good luck Franz! and: good luck Craig, Tad, Bobby and Galen! oh! and come to fn's Brixton wake here: www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=424963725646&ref=mf

Good luck Franz, look forward to hearing more of your solo stuff and other projects and seeing you whenever you come to the UK. Thanks for your huge contribution to THS over the years in the studio and live and your infectious smile and friendliness to the fans. I really hope THS can continue to be as great without you as they were with you.

Sad, of course. Really sad. First, I misread the news, and thought that he wasn't leaving the band untill september, which would mean that he would be present at the new album, and probably on the first leg of the tour. Now it seems he's allready gone, which brings up some questions both about the record and about touring.
Thank you, Franz, for both your musical contributions, your fantastic presence on the stage and your smile. I've never known a Hold Steady without you, but you will sure be missed from the band I learned to love.
So, what now?

And I have to say this, even though it makes me seem kind of crazy and mad (I'm not): I still have one of Franz' used toothpicks, so if it ever gets possible to clone humans, I will personally make sure we get a 100% accurate replacement.

If it helps anyone see the future of THS better, just remember that the AKM sessions only has Franz (if I'm not mistaken) on "Certain Songs,"Modesto Is Not That Sweet," and "You Gotta Dance (With Who You Came to the Dance With)"
