Not exactly hard-hitting news here, but at the Gaslight Anthem show in Seattle last night they threw a few C. Finn lyrics into the mix. After the 2nd chorus in "Old White Lincoln" Brian started singing
"You don't have to deal with the dealers, let your boyfriend deal with the dealers / There's always other boys, there's always other boyfriends"
Not sure if this is a regular occurrence, it was my first time seeing Gaslight. I was hoping Gaslight would be opening for THS this fall, but The Loved Ones, Murder By Death, and Frank Turner made it a great show.

Nice.
I'm going to THS tonight and Gaslight next Thursday. What order were the opening bands? I really want to see Frank Turner, but I might be running late that day.

Frank opened, and I believe he started around an hour after the doors opened. Doors were at 7, we got there around 8:30 or 8:45 and he was just finishing. Then the Loved Ones played, and Murder By Death!

Thanks, that's what I would have guessed. Looks like I'm gonna have to do whatever I can to get there on time then.

I saw Gaslight with MBD, the Loved Ones and Ninja Gun at Pops in St Louis a couple weeks ago. They all put on a really good show. When the Loved Ones were doing their sound check they played a couple notes from Stuck Between Stations and then Constructive Summer. My friend and I got overly excited hoping maybe they'd cover them but no luck. Still all bands put on a hell of a show.

I think an arguement came up on my FB a while back about this. I think either Ekennedy or Essbee said they were going to do something about it.

I'm glad that they're having a ton of fun on stage, and that they're playing what they love, but they aren't sincere in the slightest with the music.

but they aren't sincere in the slightest with the music. Having seen them play a fantastic show in the summer I have to disagree, Brian made every word of Here's Looking At You Kid sound totally sincere, turning Hyde Park in the afternoon into the most intimate of venues. They play with a classic palate of influences and are straight ahead pop rock for sure. But I love classic pop rock. Why go looking for the cool alternative when you love Thin Lizzy?

Ok, I know I've mentioned this on another thread here before, but here goes...
Yes, Gaslight aren't exactly covering too much new ground and owe a huge debt to Springsteen in terms of some of their sources. However, there's a couple of things that I bear in mind when thinking about this:
Firstly, I came to hear about The Gaslight Anthem AND The Hold Steady because of links to / comparisons with Bruce. I love Bruce (especially everything up to and including Tunnel of Love) and have done since I was in my early teens. So for me, the comparisons were a decent signpost to something I might like.
Maybe it's me, but I reckon that anyone who can write / sing lines like "at night I wake up with the sheets soaking wet / It's a pretty good song baby you know the rest" must be doing so with at least a little humour / irony!?
Also, how ever much they might be influenced by / copying Bruce, he seems okay with it. Check out his Glastonbury cameo with them to see his sincerity!
I'm not a punk, and have never rearly considered myself a huge punk fan (I was surprised to hear THS described this way!) I love rock n roll and often things that do sound a bit retro. To me, Gaslight (and THS) are great rock n roll bands. The fact that they both do the business with energy and enthusisam live also helps.
Plenty of recent (and not so recent) bands have built careers on homage / being influenced by / outright lifting (see Oasis, Kasabian and many others). If people like it, what can you say? Give me guitars, drums, decent lyrics and the balls to do it live over a lot of other music any day!
OK so some of the references are a bit obvious, but hey, it's only rock n roll!
PS The "Emo Street Band" made me laugh though!
