I saw some debate of this in the Bob Dylan/Neil Young thread.
My favourite double albums are; The Smashing Pumpkins - Melon Collie & Infinite Sadness - This album was the soundtrack to my life from about 2003-2006 Bruce Springsteen - The River Bob Dylan - Blonde on Blonde Rolling Stones - Exile on Main St Jimi Hendrix Experience - Electric Ladyland
Worst: Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Stadium Arcadium - One of the worst records of all time. GnR - Use Your Illusion - Awful follow up

The Best
Being There London Calling Quadrophinia Tommy
The Worst
Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness Welcome to The Pleasure Dome Stadium Arcadium
And, Use Your Illusion, Is not a double album. Both records do however for the most part suck pretty bad.

Use Your Illusion is a double album though, GnR just wanted to make more of a profit so they released 2 albums for £10 each instead of one £15 album.
I also call Bright Eyes' "I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning" & "Digital Ash in a Digital Urn" a double album, but they were released separately because they are completely different albums; GnR used the same title on both albums and both share an identical sound/

They were both single albums. If you have to buy them seperately, then by definition it's not a double album. It's just like when Springsteen put out Human Touch and Lucky town on the same day. They are two seperate albums released at the same time.

Best:
London Calling Double Nickels on the Dime Zen Arcade Goodbye Yellow Brick Wall Songs in the Key of Life Frampton Comes Alive! Electric Ladyland Being There
Worst: Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
Besides Mellon Collie, I don't find myself particularly hating any double albums. If an artist puts out a double album, and I've liked their previous work I usually dig the stuff on their double album. Even non-stellar double albums like The River, or Tommy (or Quadrophenia), or Stadium Arcadium have enough gems to play like two normal albums with a bit of filler on each. Also (I think this has come up on a thread elsewhere) what is a double album nowadays? Stadium Arcadium would have been 4 records long on vinyl and single albums like Z by My Morning Jacket do in fact take up TWO vinyl records. The same is true for Stay Positive. So what is the criteria nowadays?

Sorry, that's just One Reporter's Opinion (Oh yeah name checking Double Nickel tracks ;D). Really though, Quadrophenia is great but falls short of STELLAR you know?

I like all the bests but unmentioned, surprisingly, was Say Anything's In Defense of the Genre. Don't know how you guys get down with the Bemis, or if you do at all, but it's a wild, diverse record that never gets tired.
And Stadium Arcadium BLEW. Shame because the Chili Peppers were the first band that let me know that there was something to listen to other than country music that my folks liked.

Stay Positive could have fit on one vinyl record. But it's a valid point that double album is a nearly meaningless term nowadays; equally it's true that having 80 minutes to play on a CD with has resulted literally thousands of albums that are too long. I think they only way to define a double is an album that was originally released on two 33rpm vinyl discs. There isn't one double album about which I think "Thank God that's 80 minutes long!". There are some where I understand that the really crap bits are an organic part of the whole, and that simply having the best 12 songs would result in a very different (and possibly inferior) disc - the White Album, London Calling, Exile. But my favourite double ... "i" by AR Kane. By no means perfect, but thoroughly interesting. It can be found on the interwebs. And here is some information about them: www.trouserpress.com/entry.php?a=ar_kane

I haven't tackled Defense of the Genre yet though. I'm still on Baseball. However, "Wow, I can Get Sexual Too" is a complete tune.

This is an odd one as some of the records on here I don't consider doubles as I have the CD and it's all on one disc (Manic Street Preachers, Wilco, Husker Du) and some I do as i have the vinyl (Both Use Your Illusion albums are double albums, that was the point. Sign Of The Times is a double, Stay Positives a double in those books) and some are doubles whatever format you get em on (Stadium Arcadium *which I rather like*, The Wall, Tommy, The River)... So I'll just add this...
With the exception of London Calling and Electric Ladyland, all albums over 14 tracks can be improved by editing. Including The White Album.

I didn't mind Stadium Arcadium, as despite the terrible name and lots of filler, some of it was really good. The Chili's best album for me was the painfully ignored One Hot Minute. It's so fun, there's lots of funkiness, and some very memorable tracks like Aeroplane and My Friends. (oh yeah, and London Calling was amazing.)

Best:
Live and Dangerous - Thin Lizzy At War With The Mystics - The Flaming Lips The Wall - Pink Floyd (if you can get through it... HEAVY. SHIT. MAN.) London Calling - The Clash Quadrophenia - The Who Stay Positive - The Hold Steady
Worst: The Wall - Pink Floyd (there is almost as much not to like about this record than there is to like. Waters gets tiresome eventually. If you can see through the flaws most of the time though it's dece) Stadium Arcadium - RHCP
