There are a few threads that have links to downloadable music, there are some threads with requests to send someone music. Please understand that you are on the band's official site. It is moderated by someone who works for the record label. It is in very poor taste to trade or give someone music in this public forum.
Linking a bootleg is fine, I personally love it when I find a good sounding bootleg. Bootlegging, in some ways, promotes the community of independent music.
But sending someone music that they could easly buy (anything in print) isn't something you should be doing here. It is insulting to both the band and myself. This includes b-sides, b-sides are things that we use as promotional tools or to use one something else that would help the band.
I understand not wanting to pay $50 for some of these things on eBay, I understand looking for things that are out-of-print. But know where to draw the line. If you can buy it, please do.
So please don't share any studio recordings from The Hold Steady or Lifter Puller here, it is just in poor taste.

Ok, so where does one find CD or legit digital copies of For Boston, American Music and other b-sides? Ain't got me no turntable, so the vinyl only releases don't get the job done. Any thoughts? (besides by a turntable) Gracias.

Emusic and itunes have several of these (Against the Wind, and Girls Like Status are both on itunes, for example, and Teenage Liberation is definitely on emusic). Almost all of them are available on the import versions, which are expensive but well worth it unless you hurting to put food in your mouth.
Aussie import of AKM: - Milkcrate Mosh (also available on vinyl with "Hey, Hey, What Can I do as b-side") - Hot Fries (also available on Target Red Room compilation) - Curves and Nerves - Modesto is Not that Sweet - You Gotta Dance (acoustic version on Live at Fingerprints)
Aussie Import for BAGIA - - For Boston - Arms and Hearts - American Music - ?
Also you should buy a turntable. And check out the many, many legit live recordings floating around for free.

last i checked you couldn't get it in digital form... Technically, doesn't that mean we can share it in the forums, as there are only 500 copies which we could have bought. Note:I have a link to a digital copy.

why was my thread about The Hold Steady bootleg site taken down? It's within these rules, and it's not widely known about (beyond the regulars of the site). But I'm a diehard fan and would have loved to know about the site much earlier, and I know there's people like me who would love to know about that site.

Is there something ambiguous about the top post in this thread? I have had to delete 3 posts this week offering up illegal copies of THS studio recordings. That's more posts than I deleted during the whole of the "stay positive leak" debacle. You have the whole wide internets to share illegal copies of hold steady songs folks. Don't do it here.

What about filesharing other music?

not sure what you mean? you mean other than the hold steady? or other than studio albums?
any sharing of copyrighted material is generally frowned upon. i fully admit we've been inconsistent about it, but the moderators can delete any post containing links to illegal copies, even to other bands' music. it's illegal. the hold steady doesn't want their music swiped here; so why should they let other bands' music be stolen here? more practically, if this became a forum for regular illegal file-sharing, it could generate a whole host of problems for the board or the label.
but if you were asking about bootlegs, live recordings or legit streams, go forth and share.

I think people who fileshare should be shot or banned for life. Record companies hate all bootleggers. The recording you're passing onto your friends just might be the recording that could be sold so somebody can make a down payment on the Cadillac they intend to buy.
Remember, we're not talking fruits and vegetables here. Illegal recordings rob from everybody. They even take money from the mouths of roadies who sell tee shirts & CDs at concerts. Bootlegging is essentially a criminal act. Only a hoodrat would legitimately steal from the band. If you want to see The Hold Steady take over the world of rock and roll then it's probably not a good idea to do filesharing. I don't care what sort of hopeless rationale you intend to use to justify your act, please don't do it.
